The Knotted Project

The Knotted Project is a physical theatre company based in Cumbria and run by duo Natalie and Simon. They develop original productions, championing collaboration and multi-art form approaches to creating and learning. Formed in 2013, the company works regularly with organisations such as The Brewery Arts Centre, The Dukes, Big Imaginations and The Lowry. They have created theatre tours, festivals and received funding from the British Council and Arts Council England (as well as Great Place: Lakes and Dales!).

Following the outbreak of Covid-19, the company adapted by producing a rhyming children’s story ‘Inside the Igloo’ in partnership with Hawk Dance Theatre, inspired by their touring production ‘Outside the Igloo’. The book is also supported by an interactive website to help children & families stay creative during lockdown (www.igloostory.com).

In 2021 they have been commissioned by Lakeland Arts to produce an interactive, immersive exhibition at Windermere Jetty.  They will also be running Forge the Future, a project for young people from Cumbria aged 15 – 22. A direct response to the pandemic, it provides a creative opportunity for those taking part and is a partnership project with Great Place: Lakes and Dales, Deco Publique, Kendal College, Institute for Social Futures and the Brewery Arts Centre. The performance company will create a unique film that explores the impact of Covid-19 on young creatives in Cumbria. The film will be launched digitally at an event in early March.

Co- Director Simon also features as a case study on our Create Your Future resource. You can watch a film about his career and read more about it here.
